Who needs a visa for Bhutan?
The rules depend entirely on your nationality. Bhutan has a special relationship with three South Asian countries — their citizens need a permit but not a visa. Everyone else needs an e-visa, which must be arranged through a licensed operator before arrival.

Every tourist entering Bhutan — regardless of nationality — must also pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). This is separate from the visa and applies per person per night.

Section 2 — Indian travelers
The Bhutan Entry Permit for Indians
Indian citizens do not need a visa, but the Bhutan Entry Permit is mandatory and strictly enforced at every entry point — including Paro Airport and the Phuentsholing land border. Travelers who arrive without a valid permit are turned back, regardless of their reason for visiting.
Aadhaar card is not accepted as a valid entry document for Bhutan. Indian travelers must carry either their Original Passport or their Original Voter ID Card (EPIC). Digital copies, photocopies, or downloaded versions of any document are refused at immigration. Only original physical documents are accepted.

We apply on your behalf
DMC BHUTAN TRIP submits your application to the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) through our licensed operator account. This is the only legal channel — individual applications are not accepted.

Your Entry Permit is issued by TCB and sent to you as a PDF. Print it out and carry the original with you — your guide will present it at the border on arrival.

Border check on arrival
At Paro Airport or Phuentsholing border, immigration officers verify your permit against your original ID. Your guide walks you through this. The process typically takes 15–30 minutes.
For minors traveling with Indian families: Children must carry their Original Passport (preferred) or Original Birth Certificate issued by the government. Aadhaar card is not accepted for minors. Photocopied or digitally downloaded birth certificates are rejected.

Section 3 — International travelers
Bhutan e-visa for international travelers
Citizens of all countries except India, Bangladesh, and Maldives require a Bhutan e-visa before entering. The process is straightforward but non-negotiable — you cannot enter Bhutan without a valid e-visa, and you cannot apply for one independently.

We submit the application
DMC BHUTAN TRIP submits your visa application to TCB along with your confirmed booking. TCB processes and approves. The $40 visa fee is included in your payment to us.

e-Visa approval letter received
You receive a PDF approval letter. Print this and carry it with your passport. Your guide will present it at Paro Airport immigration. The actual visa stamp is issued at the border.
The PDF alone is not your visa — the border stamp is. Both are required.

SDF noteChildren aged 6–12: SDF is 50% of the standard rate. Children 5 and under: SDF is fully waived. Age proof may be requested at the border.

The SDF — what it is and where it goes
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a per-night charge that all foreign tourists pay as a condition of entering Bhutan. It is not an optional tourism tax or a tip — it is a mandatory government levy, collected through licensed operators before your trip begins.
Bhutan uses the SDF to fund its model of High Value, Low Volume tourism — keeping visitor numbers low enough that the country remains pristine, uncrowded, and culturally intact.

Every Bhutanese citizen receives free healthcare for life. Hospitals, clinics, medicines — all funded by the SDF and government revenue.

Why the SDF makes Bhutan worth visiting: Unlike almost every other tourist destination, Bhutan has actively chosen not to compete for visitor volume. The monasteries are not crowded. The trails are not worn out. The people are not exhausted by tourism. The SDF is what makes this possible. When you pay it, you are directly funding the reason the country is still worth going to.

The August 2027 SDF deadline
The current SDF rate of $100/person/night for international travelers is guaranteed only until 31 August 2027. After that date, the fee is expected to return to $200/person/night — the rate that was in place before 2022.

No. All foreign tourist permits and e-visas for Bhutan must be arranged through a TCB-licensed tour operator. Individual applications directly to the government are not accepted. This is Bhutan's deliberate policy to maintain low-volume, high-quality tourism. DMC BHUTAN TRIP is a licensed operator and handles the entire process for you.

Generally no. Once the SDF has been paid and your trip has started, unused nights are not refunded — whether you leave early due to illness, a family emergency, or a change of plans. This is why comprehensive travel insurance covering trip curtailment is strongly recommended. The only exception is if Bhutan Immigration denies you entry (extremely rare with a valid permit), in which case a refund is processed.
Yes, with some conditions. Extensions must be applied for through your licensed operator before your current permit expires. Additional SDF must be paid for the extended nights. Extensions are generally approved unless you are in a restricted area permit zone, in which case re-application may be required. Yes. Some regions of Bhutan — particularly certain trekking areas, border zones, and the Haa Valley — require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) in addition to the standard entry permit. These are applied for at the same time as your main permit, by your licensed operator. If your itinerary includes any restricted areas, DMC BHUTAN TRIP will apply for all permits simultaneously so there are no surprises on the ground.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying — the permit or visa will be tied to your passport number, and a renewed passport will require a new application. Allow time for both passport renewal and permit processing (minimum 3–4 weeks total for international travelers).
The Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) licenses approved tour operators who are authorised to arrange tourist permits and visas. Only licensed operators can apply to TCB on behalf of tourists — unlicensed operators or individuals cannot. DMC BHUTAN TRIP holds a valid TCB licence, which means every permit we process is legally issued and will be accepted at the border. If a company you're speaking to cannot show their TCB licence, do not book with them — their permits will be invalid.
