Bhutan sits between 1,300m (Punakha Valley) and 3,100m (Dochula Pass) across a typical 7-day itinerary. That altitude range, combined with radically different seasons, means packing thoughtfully makes a real difference to your comfort. This guide is written for the traveler doing a standard cultural or family tour. If you're trekking the Druk Path or Jomolhari, there's a dedicated trekking gear section below.

Section 6
Documents & digital copies
Always carry the original physical document. Digital copies and scans are for your own reference only โ Bhutan Immigration does not accept them. Note that Aadhaar card is not a valid entry document for Bhutan for any traveler, adult or minor.
โ ๏ธ Bhutan Immigration accepts original documents only โ no exceptions.
Photocopies, scanned printouts, screenshots, and digital versions are refused at both Paro Airport and the Phuentsholing land border. Always carry the original physical document.
Aadhaar card is not accepted as a valid identity document for entry into Bhutan. Indian travelers must carry either their Original Passport or their Original Voter ID Card (EPIC). No other identity document is accepted by Bhutan Immigration.
For minors: Aadhaar card is also not accepted for children. The only valid document for a minor is their Original Passport. If the minor does not hold a passport, an Original Birth Certificate is accepted โ but only the original government-issued certificate, not a photocopy or digitally downloaded version.

Bhutan customs are strict on some items โ knowing what to leave home avoids problems at the border
Section 8
What NOT to bring to Bhutan
Some items will cause problems at Bhutan customs or are simply unnecessary weight. Leave these at home.
๐ฌ
Tobacco products
Bhutan heavily restricts tobacco. You can bring a limited personal supply but must pay import duty. Cigarettes cannot be purchased inside Bhutan. Vaping devices are prohibited.
๐ฅฉ
Meat products
Do not bring processed meat, sausages, or dried meat across the border. Bhutan customs regularly checks for animal products.
๐ฟ
Drugs & controlled substances
Bhutan has a zero-tolerance policy. Even prescription medicines should have documentation. Do not bring anything without a prescription.
๐ซ
Weapons of any kind
Including pocket knives, camping axes, and self-defence sprays. Trekking equipment with blades should be declared. Leave anything weapon-adjacent at home.
๐
Anti-monarchy material
Books, pamphlets, or other material deemed critical of the Bhutanese royal family or government can result in denial of entry.
๐
Revealing clothing
Bikinis, crop tops, extremely short shorts, and sleeveless tops are fine for your hotel but don't belong in public areas or at any religious site. Pack conservatively.
๐ธ
Drones without clearance
Drones are prohibited except with special TCB approval. The permit process takes months. Leave your drone home unless you started the permit process early.
๐งด
Excessive toiletries
All quality hotels provide shampoo, soap, conditioner, and basic toiletries. Don't fill your bag with full-size bottles. Miniatures or a 100ml kit is plenty.
Important: Bhutan customs checks are thorough. Declare anything you're unsure about. Border officials at Phuentsholing (land) and Paro Airport are experienced and professional โ honesty is always the right approach.
